This is an exciting time to be in Ghana and West Africa in general! In a key global region of growth, Ghana has been a safe, stable democracy for more than 25 years, and the Ivory Coast has recently had a peaceful transition of power following democratic elections. As the countries continue their journey towards middle-income status, traditional development cooperation is gradually being phased out and replaced by strategic partnerships focusing on political and commercial cooperation.

At the same time Danish companies are showing an increased interest in the markets of Ghana and West Africa. Therefore, the Embassy is expanding the trade division and its commercial activities. As an intern in the field of trade and investment you will get a comprehensive insight into the commercial sector of Ghana and Ivory Coast and an opportunity to follow the building of the strategic commercial partnerships first hand.

You will be assisting the Business Team in various areas depending on your interests and qualifications, but typical assignments are:

  • Contribute to market analysis

  • Research and draft fact sheets related to economic and trade related aspects relevant to Danish companies

  • Participate in meetings with Danish and local stakeholders, field visits, etc.

  • Assist in preparing and conducting visits from business delegations

  • Assist in proactive contact to Danish, Ivorian and Ghanaian companies

  • Assist in formulating news updates

  • Ad-hoc tasks at the Embassy, including minute taking, meeting planning, etc.

The internship in Accra will provide you with:

  • An insight into Denmarks commercial partnership with Ghana and Ivory Coast, and international diplomacy

  • Dedicated colleagues ready to guide and involve you in their work

  • Insight into the challenges for a newly lower middle-income country

  • An opportunity to work as an integrated part of the trade team and be directly involved in its projects

Who are you?
To apply for an internship, it is a condition that you:

  • Hold a B.Sc.;

  • Are enrolled in a relevant masters programme in Denmark (cand.merc., cand.pol, cand.oecon or similar within e.g. (but not limited to) international business, business administration, or economic development)

Key qualifications:

  • You are independent and proactive. You understand the basic dynamics of micro- and macroeconomics, you are able to take the initiative, and you are comfortable working independently.

  • You have diplomatic skills. You will work closely with stakeholders from different departments and embassies, and as part of the Embassy, you represent Denmark abroad. It is important that you have good interpersonal skills, can actively network internally and externally, are a good listener, and can make your points with both tact and tenacity.

  • You are curious and resilient. You are excited about the possibility to live and work in Ghana and learn about West African culture, business, and people. This requires a lot from you in terms of open-mindedness and adaptability. Add to this that you will work at an Embassy where work can be hectic and sometimes unpredictable. It is important that you are able to embrace these challenges in stride.

  • You get stuff done. We have high expectations for your time here. We expect you to be result-oriented, that you are comfortable meeting deadlines while delivering a product of high quality, and that you chip in and help with the many tasks - from the mundane to the novel - that working at a Danish representation entails.

Proficiency in Danish and English are also musts. French language skills are considered an additional asset.

The internship is 6 months. The period of the internship will be from February 1st 2018 to July 31st 2018.

The Embassy provides a compensation of DKK 3,000 per month to support your expenditures for accommodation, visa, and transport.

How do I apply?
The application should be in English (max 1 A4-page) and include a description of how the internship is expected to contribute to the applicants studies. CV and a copy of grade certificate should be attached. The application should be titled Trade and Investment Intern and sent to accamb@um.dk
